Sandford in the Community

Sandford is committed to supporting and developing the local community and environment.

Mekane Hiwot School

Each year, Sandford students and teachers commit their time and efforts to fundraise for a local school – Mekane Hiwot. We have an excellent working relationship with the teachers and students and staff and students from Sandford will often visit the school.

During the academic year 2016-2017, Sandford raised money to build a new toilet block and washing facilities. After the great success of this venture, Sandford is now working towards raising enough funds to build a new canteen. This will allow Mekane Hiwot students to eat in a safe and comfortable environment throughout the year, which will, in turn, improve their learning.

Primary Fundraising

Students in the Primary School are provided with the opportunity to use their entrepreneurial skills to organize events and activities to raise money to support our local beneficiaries.

  • Raise and Give is a group of students who plan, organise and undertake events chosen by themselves. They are involved and responsible for all aspects of the event, including advertising, finances, technical support and logistics. Recent events in past have included Sandford’s Got Talent, bake-sales, student-teacher swap days, and the Holiday Show.
  • The Student Council plays a big part in fundraising. 2 students per class are elected to represent their fellow classmates and to put forward the concerns, ideas and opinions of the school community. This has enabled them to organise fundraising events such as a Year 3-6 Dodgeball tournament, Splash the Teacher at the annual School Fete, Spelling Bee and Tape the Headteacher to a Tree.
  • Students regularly are self-motivated to undertake individual fundraising. This year, students have organised bake sales and obstacle courses.

Donations

Each year, Sandford School donates a range of school supplies to surrounding local schools. We provide reading, writing and recording equipment to aid the education of local children.

Scholarships

Sandford provides scholarships for students in the Secondary School. Over the past ten years, 60 students have graduated from Sandford on a full scholarship. These students have successfully gone on to attend a range of universities including in the UK, US and China.

Sandford Night School

Sandford hosts English language classes for local adults. These subsidised night classes enable adults in the community to develop their English language skills, which then enables them to further their careers.
