Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations. It takes place as an after-school activity and is open to students in all years from 7-13. The weekly sessions are run by our seniors. It aims to educate students about issues of international global significance and the work of the UN itself. Students learn to ‘walk in the shoes of another’ by becoming a representative of a country other than their own. They role-play being diplomats and discuss solutions to problems together. These student delegates learn about diplomacy and international relations. Delegates become adept at researching, public speaking, debating, and they learn to hone their writing skills. They also improve their critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills. Topics that committees debate on range from Nuclear disarmament to the plight of refugees and internally displaced peoples (IDPs).

Sandford takes part in several conferences both locally and internationally. We host our own mock debates and attend The Hague Model United Nations (THIMUN), in the Hague, the Netherlands.
